How To Tie A Tie
Tying a tie can seem tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy. Here are instructions for the most common method, the Four-in-Hand Knot:
Four-in-Hand Knot
- Start: Drape the tie around your neck with the wide end on your right, hanging about 12 inches lower than the narrow end on your left.
- Cross: Cross the wide end over the narrow end, forming an “X” near your neck.
- Loop: Bring the wide end under the narrow end and back to the right side.
- Wrap: Cross the wide end over the front of the knot again from right to left.
- Up Through the Neck Loop: Pull the wide end up through the neck loop from underneath.
- Tuck: Tuck the wide end down through the loop in front of the knot.
- Tighten: Hold the narrow end while sliding the knot up to adjust tightness. Straighten the knot and center it under your collar.
Other Popular Knots
- Half Windsor Knot: A medium-sized knot that’s symmetrical and perfect for a more formal look.
- Full Windsor Knot: A large, triangular knot that’s ideal for wide collar shirts.
